Well, what can I say? He is the guitar god of all-time! James
Hetfield invented the modern thrash riff, before him, using palm-muted open notes
in repetition wasn't done. He is a master of the simply riff and the complex
progression. Every song that he has written has layers upon layers of great
musicality. Songs that have simple riffs often have complex arrangements and
progression, and his works that have simple progression often used a complex
rhythm.
As a developing musician, I have learned many things from James Hetfield. I
learned that everything doesn't have to be at one hundred miles an hour. I
learned that Metal is a state of mind and attitude, which carries through whatever
you play. I also learned to make music thoughtful. Not something overly analyzing,
but something that says what you want to say.
